Get Your First Job Before Your Mid-Twenties

Professional Development

Back in 2010 when I was at school, I thought working at a job was something I didn’t had to worry about until I got my degree. To be honest, the idea of working wasn’t too appealing at that time; having to obey a boss, and work long hours was all I thought about.

I was looking at the picture in the wrong way. Just like when you go to a museum, and you don’t understand why a bunch of paint brushes are worth the admiration of its viewers. There is more to a job than what you can observe. Now, I will explain why you should get your first job before your mid-twenties.

Jobs shape who you are

I believe that good jobs shape people in their early 20s in functioning members of society and helps them grow into better human beings. By gaining experience – invaluable knowledge and skills that can’t be learned other ways; they understand how the world works and evolve their character to adapt to it.

Working Experience Improves Your Competitivity

When I turned 23, I understood the power of experience. Thanks to all the jobs I had taken before my undergrad internship I was able to land a great position at a consulting firm, boosting my career.

Most Colombians I went to college with never had worked before their internship. Only a few had had a one job, but this was not the norm. When they began their round of interviews, they scored poorly against their peers with working experience.

If you want to be competitive in the labor market, you have to build a good resume. The thing that will separate you from your peers, beside the school you attended, is your working experience.

Management Perspective

From a management perspective, when someone applies for a position without any working experience they can appear as lacking in motivation or drive. Employers can think they would not perform well at their job or that there is a big reason behind why they haven’t worked before.

Getting working experience before the mid-twenties places you above your peers. It highlights you as a competent worker that is willing to put the effort to achieve big goals in life.

Conclusion

Working at a job provides people in their early 20s multiple benefits that shouldn’t be wasted. Working at a Job allows young adults to grow as human beings, it turns individuals into members of society, and makes people more competitive. Jobs aren’t supposed to be fun or enjoyable, some can even be stressing. This doesn’t mean we should avoid them but change our perspective to them.

Getting Your First Job Before Your Mid-Twenties should be young adults priority.
